Oct. 6, 1863 - Quantrill's raiders, disguised in Union uniforms slaughtered 90 union soldiers at the Battle of Baxter Springs, Baxter Springs, Kansas. One of the union troops killed was Maj. Zarah Curtis, and a year later, the US Army named an Indian fort 2 miles east of present day Great Bend, Ks after him: Fort Zarah. Quantrill's raiders included Frank and Jessie James and the Younger brothers who later used some of their guerrilla tactics for bank and train robberies.

Nov. 2, 1863 - The University of Kansas was permanently located and sited on Mt. Oread, Lawrence, after a close battle with the citizens of Emporia.
